Did you know?

Jet lag symptoms are often worse when traveling eastward due to the need to advance your internal clock.

Understanding jet lag and recovery

Jet lag is a temporary disruption of your body’s internal clock caused by rapid travel across multiple time zones. This internal clock, or circadian rhythm, helps regulate sleep, hormone release, digestion, and other key functions. When your circadian rhythm is out of sync with local time, you may experience fatigue, insomnia, irritability, and trouble concentrating. The more time zones you cross, the more pronounced these symptoms can become.

Common triggers for jet lag include long-haul flights, irregular sleep schedules, and dehydration during travel. Managing jet lag often involves adjusting your sleep routine, seeking natural light, and staying hydrated. Gradual adaptation and supportive strategies can help your body adjust more smoothly. Responsible management focuses on restoring balance and minimizing discomfort during recovery.

Common Symptoms of Jet Lag

Symptoms of jet lag often begin soon after arrival in a new time zone. Many people notice persistent tiredness, difficulty falling asleep, and waking up earlier or later than intended. These sleep disruptions can make it challenging to feel rested and alert during the day. Some individuals also report headaches, digestive discomfort, and a general sense of malaise.

Brain fog and trouble concentrating are common, especially when trying to resume work or social activities. Mood changes such as irritability or mild anxiety may occur, making it harder to enjoy your trip or return to daily routines. Physical symptoms like muscle aches or a lack of energy can further impact your ability to function. The severity of symptoms often depends on the number of time zones crossed and individual differences in adaptation.

Jet lag can also weaken the immune system temporarily, increasing susceptibility to minor illnesses. Dehydration from air travel may worsen fatigue and slow recovery. Some people experience changes in appetite or digestive patterns, adding to overall discomfort. Recognizing these patterns can help you take steps to support your recovery and ease the transition.

Traditional Treatments

Traditional approaches to managing jet lag focus on adjusting your sleep schedule before and after travel. Gradually shifting your bedtime, seeking exposure to natural light, and using melatonin supplements are common strategies. Staying hydrated and avoiding alcohol or excessive caffeine can also help minimize symptoms. These methods aim to help your body’s internal clock adapt to the new time zone more smoothly.

Other supportive measures include gentle exercise, balanced meals, and allowing time for rest upon arrival. Some people find benefit in relaxation techniques or short naps to ease the adjustment. While most cases of jet lag resolve on their own within a few days, combining several approaches may improve comfort and speed recovery. Consulting with a healthcare provider can be helpful if symptoms are severe or persistent.

Wow, what a top-notch experience. From the moment I walked in the door to getting my IV, slipping into the compression leggings, and topping it off with a red-light session—everything was seamless. The space is bright, clean, and professional, yet still incredibly relaxing with a spa-like feel. Dana, the nurse, was fantastic and made the whole experience so pleasant. Many thanks, Drip Bar!

I went to the DRIPBaR when I was on day four of having the Flu and they were all hands on deck to get me feeling better! Everyone was beyond friendly and so happy to help. The facility is incredibly clean and tidy and they have a large variety of offerings including red light therapy. I felt better almost immediately and even better the following day. Prices may seem high but when you’re super sick and don’t have time to be, it’s worth it IMO.
